Meet Birdie!

Hello again, friends and fans. This week I'm interviewing a friend of mine, all around great cat, Birdie! Birdie is 6 years old grey tabby and white domestic medium hair . She's been at NAHS since June 2009 and could really use a great home. I hope you enjoy listening in on our chat!
So, Birdie, how did you come to stay at NAHS?
Hi there, darling. I've been here for so long, I almost forgot what it was like to be in a real home. But there was a time when I had a family and a home to call my own, and it was marvelous! I thought I would always stay there, but then my family fell on some tough times, and when push came to shove, they just couldn't afford to keep me in the manner I had become accustomed to. So they knew if they brought me here to NAHS I would be able to find a charming new family that would spoil me just as much as they used to!
It sounds like you had a great family, and it's too bad they couldn't afford to keep you anymore. What kind of family would you like now?
Oh, I'm not too picky. I can be shy around new people, and I may not be outgoing enough for small children. I do hope my family will be neat and tidy like myself. I prefer a clean litterbox, and positively insist my new family cleans my box daily! Other than that, I think I could get along with just about anybody!
What else can you tell us about yourself, Birdie?
Oh, I'm just your typical lady. I need to get a lot of beauty rest and enjoy regular manicures (did you know the ladies here at NAHS will do that for free, my entire life, just to help out my new family?!). I don't enjoy thunderstorms, so I'm hoping I'll find a new family that will comfort me now that rainy season is starting. I'm a pretty low key girl but I'm sure I can charm the socks off just about anyone. I sure do hope now lots of people will come and meet me!

Pipsqueak : She's a lot of dog in a little package!

Greetings from NAHS! This week I'm going to interview a very special little dog, Pipsqueak! Pipsqueak is a 1 year old Jack Russel Terrier who was brought here when somebody found her running-at-large. The rescuer really liked Pipsqueak, and would have loved to keep her, but unfortunately his dog did not agree! So after a mandatory wait over at Naperville Animal Control, she came here to find her perfect family.
Pipsqueak! How are you liking your stay here at NAHS?
Things here at NAHS are pretty great. I get several long walks a day, lots of people come and sit with me in my kennel, and they make sure I'm spoiled with treats. I don't mind hanging out here, but I'm really looking forward to finding a family of my own.
A family does sound nice! What kind of family would you like?
Well, I'm not too picky, but there are certain things I would hope my new family would have. I'm very hyper and love to play, so an active family is a must. I could use a dog experienced home, and if you have Jack Russel Terrier experience that would be even better. Because I'm so active, and I can jump super high, kids in my new home should be at least twelve years old. I really want to learn some obedience, and I'm super smart, so if my new family is home at least part time that would be fabulous! There is one important thing my forever home shouldn't have: cats! My favorite thing is chasing and teasing, and possibly jumping on kitties, so I just know I'd be too much if I had to live with one.
What's your favorite thing about NAHS?
There are so many things I like about the Naperville Area Humane Society! Today I think my favorite thing are the volunteers. This morning they rushed in and took me on a nice walk first thing, then they cleaned my kennel and made sure I had toys and a soft blanket to snuggle with. And of course, they always give me yummy food and fresh water. I also love that NAHS has volunteers who just sit in my kennel and give me lots of attention. Even though I can't wait for a home to call my own, I have to admit that I'm pretty spoiled here! If anyone out there is interested in becoming a volunteer the first thing you should do is attend a volunteer orientation. One is coming up next week - on Wednesday, March 10. The orientation starts at 7pm and is being held at the Naperville Municipal Building (400 S. Eagle St). I was thinking of attending myself, but somebody has to supervise all the goings on here, so I might not make it!

The Desperate Housecats are here!

Mallie Boo here, reporting from the NAHS lobby where I've been spending my days supervising kittens, taking cat naps and interviewing all the awesome adoptables. For today's segment, let me introduce you to Bugsy. Bugsy is a seven years young gray shorthair tabby. We spent some time lounging at the NAHS office, and chatting over some delicious kibble.

Bugsy! I'm so glad we're getting a chance to converse. Why don't we start with you telling me how you came to be here at NAHS?

Thanks for the question. I came here to NAHS after living with a great family for many years. They had a very nice baby who I got along with fabulously, but as he started to get older he developed some allergies and they couldn't keep me anymore. My family knew NAHS would work really hard at finding me an awesome new home, so here I am.

I know when you first arrived, you came with your brother, Salem, is it okay if we talk about that for a little bit?

That is a rough topic for me. I did come to NAHS with my brother and lifelong companion, Salem. We were pretty much inseparable and I loved snuggling with him. Unfortunately, Salem had congestive heart failure, and even though NAHS did everything they could to keep us together, Salem passed away. I miss him lots and lots, but I know he's watching over me and making sure I find a great family.

Wow, that's a pretty sad story. Is there any good news to cheer us up?

There are always good things happening here too! So don't worry. In fact, we have a promotion coming up to help me, and the other kitties, in our quest to find fabulous forever homes.
It's called 'Desperate Housecats' and all March long the adoption fee for adult cats is $75, and any kitty seven years or older will go home for only $30. It's also a great chance for us to showcase our personalities, because the ladies here make really cute signs describing all the cats. I hope lots of potential adopters will come and check it out!

Thanks for chatting with me, Bugsy, I hope this will help people know about all the great kitties here at NAHS. Good luck with Desperate Housecats!

New Year, New Home

2009 was a tough year for shelter animals, with many waiting months for a new home instead of the the typical few weeks.

Celebrate 2010 and all it's possibilities by adopting one of our long-term residents: any who have been with us for at least 30 days!

Promotional adoption fees are $100 for adult dogs, $150 for puppies, $25 for adult cats and $75 for kittens.

Meet some of our animals who are part of the promotion:
Annika is a 2 1/2 year old Calico who has been here with us for over 200 days. She can be a bit shy at first, but we're sure she'll thrive once she gets settled in her new home. She likes some other cats but we're not sure how she'll react to any new dog siblings. We're recommending that children in her new home are a little bit older because younger kids may be a bit overwhelming for her.

Beatrix is a sweet, 8 month old Australian Cattle dog mix who has been with us over 75 days. Before Beatrix came to us, she was at another shelter, so she hasn't even had a chance to enjoy being somebody's pet yet! Although she could use some help with her training, she's extremely smart and very loving. She doesn't mind most other pets and would do great in a home with school aged kids. Could you be the family who shows Beatrix how great it is to be in a home?

Meet Abby!

Hello again, fans! Mallie Boo here again, broadcasting live from NAHS, and bringing you the latest and greatest in adoptable dogs. And don't forget, even though I love blogging, what I'm really hoping for is a home to call my own! For today's interview, I went to one of the most fun girls I know, Abby! Abby is a six year old Chow Chow mix who has been here at the shelter for two months. I hope you enjoy my interview, with this year's most pupular socialite, Abby!

How did such a fun, carefree girl like yourself find herself at the shelter?

Hey, Mallie Boo, how are you? I came to NAHS when my family didn't have time for me anymore. As you know, I love to play, and enjoy staying fit and active. My family had a human baby, and they just couldn't find the extra time to spend with me. They knew that if they brought me to NAHS, I would be able to find a home that wouldn't mind spoiling me and spending lots of time with me.

What's your favorite thing about NAHS?

There are so many things I like about NAHS! The volunteers here spend lots of time giving me treats, and taking me on long walks. I also like getting to meet new people and showing everyone how well behaved I am. Sometimes I even get to sleep in the kitchen so I have extra room to stretch my legs and play all night!!

I know you have fun here, but I'm sure you'd prefer a real home. What kind of family are you looking for?

I love people and I'm not too picky! I've lived with kids before, but the real little ones might be intimidated by my size (I've got long legs like a model)! I enjoy most other dogs, especially if they have the same play style as me. I don't even mind cats. Sometimes if kitties run, I like to chase them, but the lazy cat type and me get along just fabulously! The most important thing to me is to find a home with a lot of love.

Thanks for taking the time to talk with me, Abby. I hope both of us find a forever family soon. Anyone who's interested can stop by when NAHS is open for adoptions, or give the staff a call at 630-420-8989.
